March 2010

We had a very successful trip to the Burham Festival in Australia.

If we weren't laughing we were enjoying the great sounds of many artistes.  There is two venues in a very large R.S.L. club that artists perform in. One holds over 300 people and the main one holds well over 800. So we really got a buzz from it.

They had many well known artists over the 9 days including Stepen R Cheney, Don Coster of the Coster Brothers, Dwayne Elix, Barbara Thompson, George Farnham, Peter Horan, Olive Bice to name a few and of course ourselves (LOL).

We did 27 shows in 9 days so it was really full on. Barb backed an Aborigine artiste twice so that was a great honour for her. We had four others from New Zealand supporting us and they had a ball. They were Debbie and Ron Morrison and their Aunty Anna and Wyn Mason who joined us now and again on her Wash Board. The last night of the 9 day Festival they had a Grand Finale which Barb bought the house down with a comedy act that she still gets requests for even though it's over 20 years ago since she first performed it.

What a brilliant Festival. Very well run shows from 10am til 11pm. All free except for some evening shows which were very cheap. Everything under the same roof. A coffee lounge and restaurant so you could stay there all day and be entertained to your hearts content. Just wonderful.

We have made so many friends over there.
Ross

Barb & Ross

Well here goes...

Barb & Ross started off in the early 1980s and entered many talent quests and festivals winning solos, duo's and instrumentals.

Ross had been playing the bagpipes from when he was 11 years old. In 1978 Ross become tutor of the Canterbury Caledonian Ladies Pipe Band, later renamed Canterbury Caledonian Royal Stewarts Pipe Band. After a few years of them being together, Barb decided that if you can't beat them join them and spent 5 years playing the pipes in the Band until their Country music got so busy they reluctantly had to retire from pipe banding.

In 1987 they were on holiday in the North Island and when buying a Martin Guitar, Barb spied a banjo on the wall and said to the salesman "If Ross buys that guitar will you throw the banjo in for nothing". Which to their amazement he did.

Back in Christchurch a month later they entered a contest playing the Bagpipes and Banjo together. Which they won. The unusual combination of the two instruments has made them unique.

After 10 years they decided to release their first tape "Are You Mine" and so became professionals. A couple of years later they released their second tape "Solid As A Rock". Then decided to make a compilation of the two tapes into a CD "From Then Til Now". They have now released two more CDs, "We'll Never Change" and their latest CD "Our Hearts Are Holding Hands" recorded and mastered at Arnie van Bussel's "NIGHTSHIFT STUDIOS".

In August 1989 they had a trip for 6 weeks to America. Visiting San Francisco, Los Angles, New York,  Las Vegas where Barb was lucky enough to win $1400 after a couple of pushes on the pokie machine. First money spent from her winnings was on a pair of snakeskin cowboy boots for Ross, which he's worn at least every weekend since then! (they have been resoled several times of course). After doing all the things that one does in Vegas gambling, gazing at the wonderful lights, flying through the Grand Canyon etc, they then went onto Church Street Station in Orlando , Florida followed by Memphis and Nashville.

Nashville was the highlight of our trip. Three shows at the Grand Ole Opry, sitting in the front row seats, being able to talk to the some of the artists, Hank Snow, Porter Wagner, Billie Walker to name a few.  Every night after the shows they'd go to downtown Nashville to Tootsies, Wanda And Louis and Rhinestone Cowboy's Bars where they sang and played.  That was certainly a trip of life time.

They have had many trips to Brisbane Australia , entertaining at many venues with Ilona Desree Crawford. Two trips to Barham, on the border of New South Wales and Victoria , where a nine day festival was held.  Ross and Barb were very busy going to three venues all day and night doing half hour spots at a time performing in front of 700 plus seated people. There was continuous music from 10am til midnight for free. Their travelling party of 10 Kiwis had a great time.

They have been busy playing around the Workingmens Clubs and  R.S.A's, Music Festivals and Charity events for over 20 years throughout New Zealand and always have good crowds in attendance.

As well as playing their music, they have day time jobs, and also breeding Miniature Schnauzers.

2010 will be another busy year and we look forward to catching up with you all in person.
